Here’s a look at the national scene on the Heisman Trophy through seven weeks, via Heisman Pundit.
1. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
2. Jameis Winston, QB, FSU
3. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
4. Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor
5. Jordan Lynch, QB, Northern Illinois
6. Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon State
Here’s a specific look at the SEC:
Two for the show
1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Last week’s stats: 502 total yards, 5 TDs
Season stats: 2,775 total yards, 24 total TDs, 7 INTs
Buzz: Manziel had another electric game against Auburn, and there’s little evidence to suggest Manziel isn’t the best player in college football. He had another 500+ total-yard performance, but with the loss, Manziel’s Heisman hopes took a hit nationally. He’ll most certainly have to win out to get to New York, including another big game against LSU.
2. AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama
Last week’s stats: 15 of 21 for 180 yards, 3 TD
Season stats: 126 of 182, 1,587 yards, 14 TDs, 3 INTs
Buzz: McCarron’s looking more like McCarron every single week, and the offense is putting the ball in his hands much more than last season. He’s in perfect position to make a run at the Heisman as long as Alabama keeps winning. Another undefeated regular season and big game in Atlanta may do the trick.

3. Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
Last week’s stats: 21 carries, 137 yards, one TD
Season stats: 132 carries, 879 yards, 10 TDs
Buzz: Davis had another strong week in a losing effort, putting up 137 yards and one TD against Tennessee. But now with the Gamecocks having lost two games, Davis’ glimmer of hope rests on a win this weekend against Missouri.
4. Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
Last week’s stats: 11 catches, 287 yards, 4 TDs
Season stats: 43 catches, 1,024 yards, 9 TDs
Buzz: It’s time we start talking about Mike Evans’ shot for the Stiff Arm Trophy. There’s no receiver in college football as dominant as Evans. He’s second in the country, averaging 23.81 yards per catch, and he’s the best receiver in college football.
