SEC Heisman Watch: Week 6

Here’s a look at the national scene on the Heisman Trophy through six weeks, via HeismanPundit:

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
2. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
3. Jameis Winston, QB, FSU
4. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
5. Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

Here’s a specific look at the SEC:

Top 2

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Last week’s stats: Bye week
Season stats: 1,803 yards, 17 TDs, 4 INTs
Buzz: Manziel had a week off to regroup before playing Ole Miss Saturday, and the Rebels’ defense didn’t fare too Auburn’s spread attack.

2. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
Last week’s stats: 196 yards, 3 TDs
Season stats: 1,534 yards, 14 TDs, 3 INTs
Buzz: The stat column may not look sexy this week for Murray, but how he put his team on his back certainly is. Without his two star running backs and two top wide receivers, Murray took the Dawgs on a 10-play, 75-yard game-tying drive with five seconds left. He also broke the SEC career passing yardage record held by former Bulldog David Greene.

Still in it

3. AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama
Last week’s stats: 166 yards, 4 TDs
Season stats: 1,048 yards, 10 TDs, 3 INTs
Buzz: McCarron dinked and dunked Georgia State all over the field and only played one half. McCarron’s 93.8 percent completion percentage broke a school record. He returns to action Saturday against Kentucky.

4. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
Last week’s stats: DNP, injured
Season stats: 450 yards, 4 TDs
Buzz: Gurley didn’t play last week against Tennessee due to an ankle injury, and he’s 50-50 on whether he plays this week. Should he not play, (he’s doubtful) Gurley’s hopes take a major plunge.

Two newcomers

5. Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
Last week’s stats: 340 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
Season stats: 1,738 yards, 15 TDs, 2 INTs
Buzz: It’s almost criminal what Zach Mettenberger is doing to offenses through six weeks. He leads the SEC in passer rating at 190.12, and big games against Florida, Alabama and Texas A&M will give him a big pedestal. If he torches Florida’s defense Saturday, look out.

6. Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
Last week’s stats: 106 yards, 2 TDs
Season stats: 614 yards, 8 TDs
Buzz: Davis runs like an angry man, and he’s as physical as both Todd Gurley and Jeremy Hill. Davis runs with a purpose, and he leads the SEC in rushing yards per game, averaging 122.8. If South Carolina wins out and finds themselves in Atlanta, Davis will be well in the Heisman talk, because he’ll be the player to get them there.
