Panthers’ Cam Newton needs more Monday night magic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers already would have signed quarterback Cam Newton to a long-term deal if he played every game like he does on Monday nights.

Newton is 2-0 in ESPN’s prime-time game as the Panthers (3-5-1) prepare for a Monday showdown at Philadelphia (6-2). He has thrown five touchdown passes and no interceptions for a quarterback rating of 90.3.

He completed 18 of 28 pass attempts for 306 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 14 times for 52 yards in his first Monday night game, a 30-22 victory at Philadelphia in 2012.
